What Seth Godin’s Purple Cow Taught Me About Social Media

Seth Godin is a writer, speaker and agent of change. A lot of people call him the marketing guru and he has written a lot of books on that topic including Purple Cow: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable. What I love about this guy is that he never writes specifically about social media. But he offers a lot of practical solutions to the common problem that social media strategists face: how to spread an idea. I went through some chapters of his book and his blog and this is what I learned from Seth Godin’s Purple Cow. If you want to hear him speak through video broadcast on October 11, 2011 read on for free tickets.

Step 1: Find a small group that cares
If you want to spread an idea through social media, you have to first identify a group of people (no matter how small) who care passionately about it. Farm these people, get their email addresses, talk to themdirectly, regularly. They will be the early adopters and ‘sneezers’ who will make sure your idea spreads like a mad virus.

Step 2: Do something remarkable
Whether it’s a book, a blog post to change the world or an epic journey, make sure people look! Get their attention by giving out your best stuff. How do you know something is remarkable? People have to talk about it. They can’t help but notice it and say something about it.

Step 3: Make it easy to spread the idea

An idea is nothing until people spread it and do what they want with it. Create a blog to promote your idea, share it on all the social networking sites and make it easy share online. Seth even gives away some of his ebooks for free!

What are your tips to spread ideas through social media?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. For me, being remarkable is not only to be different but OUTSTANDING. It surpasses the conventional way of thinking and genuinely engage to people constantly. A great Idea is not hard to find, but what is difficult is the resistance of change and the process to make the idea materialize.

Two years ago, I was earning enough and people can say everything was pretty stable and comfortable in my life. However, there was something inside me gnawing its way out. I couldn't put my finger what it was. Then my company sent us a book by Seth Godin to read. It was called "The Dip". It was this small, blue and white book about when to quit and when to stick. Long story short, a few months after reading the book, I quit my job. The irony. But it was so timely because I have plateaued already. And just how Godin explained the cul-de-sac and cliff of growth, I experienced everything. Looking back I can say "Why did I ever do that!" but at least its not "Why didn't I ever do that!" Those growth pains were essential to the creation of my character and I am happy to come out from my cocoon.

Thank you for sharing your story with us on how Seth Godin has helped you decide on which path to take. A similar quote by Steve Jobs, "Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life" comes to mind. I admire the courage and thank you for sharing. Much respect,Jonha
