How to Increase Traffic to Your Blog

Getting more traffic to our one of the main goals of every blogger. The more traffic you have, the more profitable and opportunities you could get.

While browsing at the stats of my blogs, I learned that my personal finance blog which I have been blogging since 2008 has an over-all page views of more than 165,000. Wanting to learn what types of articles have gotten the most visits, I learned that the month with the highest views was February.

So I went and viewed what types of articles should I be writing more about, I was surprised.

Of all months, February has the lowest number of articles published with only 3 articles. I’m not sure how could that be possible. Perhaps Blogger analytics was only messing up with me but there it is, February 2012. The month with the highest views: 11,000+.

I’ve always thought that if you want to get more traffic, updating your blog regularly is the way to go. It looks like in this case, it’s the contrary. I don’t claim to be an expert in generating traffic but I think it’s not always about the quantity but the quality.

There are certain blogging strategies that we need to implement so that we can be more successful and get more traffic.

One of which is to market your content to heavy content sharers or people who will do the promotion for you. These are content curators, heavy social media users and people who like your writing style and point of views. Don’t just write for yourself, write for your audience. Write articles that are valuable and share-able. Write pieces that people would like to link to.

Do you have specific blogging strategies that has worked for you in getting more traffic for your blog? Share them with us through the comments below!

Johna, it's important to figure out where the extra traffic came from. You may be surprised again; the most common traffic spikes like the one you're showing come from surges in organic search traffic spurred by the news cycle. Overall, traffic from Twitter is down in the blogosphere. One of your posts could have went a litle viral as well - it's all in your analytics. Compare the previous average month with February and see if you have in increase in search, referral, or direct traffic. Odds are, your traffic spike will be in one or the other. I would also recommend puutting a little more effort toward the source of your extra traffic for the next month or 2. If it's from search, try writing some pieces targeted toward Google search. If it was social in nature, try doing some content optimized for sharing (slideshows, list posts, etc.) and put some extra effort into marketing them.

Hi Adam, You're right, I gotta take a closer look what could have spiked the traffic.  Thanks for those tips, I think too that the traffic could have been results of previously written articles that could have been heavily searched on that particular month so regular updating of blog and adding searchable AND share-able content are essential too.  Again, I really appreciate those tips and I look forward to your guest post on the blog! :)
